A Letter from Dad

Apr 13, 2020 by Bonnie

A year after Mom left us, I am finally getting around to going through the boxes of memories that she left for us. Most of the writings are in Mom's hand, but occasionally I will find one of Dad's (gold!). I thought I'd share this one today, written to his children. Somehow it seems fitting to the present time, a reminder of the basics of life.

Dad writes:

"My studies of the Bible in recent years bring to my attention the eternal struggle between good and evil, God and Satan. It began when Lucifer aspired to exalt himself above God and was cast out of the presence of God and is destined to “be brought down to hell.” (See Isa. 14-17)

"It was into this power struggle God created man in His own image—free will and all!

"The old catechism states “the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”

"God created man to glorify Himself. Satan’s greatest desire is to mar the image of God in mankind. No greater glory can be brought to God than to redeem those whose image has thus been marred.

"Read carefully both old and new testament and note carefully the rules God has set for the conduct of mankind made in His image. These rules are in two basic categories. 1) Man’s relationship to His creator (which is essentially worship) and 2) Man’s relationship to his fellow man. This squares well with the above catechism.

"Why should we evangelize our fellow men? To save them from hell of course; but more—to glorify God and frustrate Satan’s plot to defame God.

"Back to the same old time-tested basic: God’s way is right and good for TIME and ETERNITY. He has provided the means of redemption and an instruction book.

"Dot, Jon and all,

(picture of a one-inch square)

"Here is that inch where we will all ultimately agree. May all of us continually search it out and make it a part of our lives. A good place to start is John 14:6 (“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father but by me.”)

Love, y’all,

Dad
